At Heartland Niagara Animal Hospital, surgery is a part of our daily routine. For you and your pet, on the other hand, it’s not something you have to deal with very often. Because of this, you probably have many questions and concerns. You may be worried about what the surgery will entail and whether your loved one will be safe. We want to set your mind at ease and help you to feel confident that when you bring your companion to us for surgical care, he or she will be in excellent hands.

Our doctors are highly experienced in performing a wide variety of pet surgeries, both routine and complex. All surgical procedures are performed in our state of the art surgical suite, using cutting edge equipment and modern surgical techniques. Most importantly, we always place the safety and comfort of our patients as our highest priority. Rest assured that we’ll do everything within our power to make sure your pet’s surgery is a complete success!

Before Surgery

Prior to your pet’s surgery, we will take a number of precautions to ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible. Complete health screenings are highly recommended, because they allow us to identify potential concerns that we need to prepare for ahead of time. This helps us to proactively address the risks associated with surgery and be better prepared to manage your pet’s safety, comfort and well-being at all times.

During Surgery

When the time comes to begin your companion’s procedure, we will take as much time as necessary to make them feel safe, comfortable and at ease. Customized pain control that is specifically tailored to your pet will be carefully administered and one of our care team members will remain with your companion as he or she drifts off into safe sedation.

The doctor will then begin the procedure, working diligently and with great precision to achieve optimum results. Your pet’s vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels, will be closely monitored throughout the surgery, and pain control will be adjusted as needed. The goal is to keep your loved one comfortable while always minimizing risk as much as possible.

Some of the surgeries routinely performed in-house include:

  • General Surgery
  • Soft Tissue Procedures
  • Oral Surgery
  • Orthopedic Procedures (Fractures, Cruciate Ligament Repair, Patella Surgery and more)
  • Ophthalmic Surgery

After Surgery

Once surgery is complete, your pet will be carefully transported to our peaceful recovery area where we will continue to monitor them as the anesthesia begins to wear off. A staff member will reach out to you to explain how everything went and to arrange for you to come pick up your pet. When you arrive, we’ll go over our post-operative care instructions, which may include an appropriate plan to manage pain and make the recovery process as smooth and comfortable as possible for your pet.

After you’ve returned home with your pet, should any questions or concerns arise, please do not hesitate to call us. No question is too silly or concern too minute when it comes to the care of your cherished companion.

If you just found out your pet needs surgery, there’s no need to worry. Especially when you’ve got the team at Heartland Niagara Animal Hospital in your corner. We’ll have that little guy or gal fixed up and on the road to a full and speedy recovery before you know it!
