Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day

There are different types of bulldogs. The English bulldog, which was beloved by Winston Churchill, is the most well-known. The American and French bulldogs are also very cute!

These lovable pooches are brachycephalic, so they have those cute, pushed-in faces. They may look a bit dour, but they generally have very calm and gentle personalities. In fact, they’re quite lazy. Bulldogs’ docile temperaments make them an excellent choice for apartment dwellers. They’re also great with kids!

Bulldogs have been winning our hearts over for a long time. The AKC officially recognized the breed in 1886. However, Fido’s actually much older than that. Bulldogs have been found in literature that dates back as far as 1500. Back then, they were called ‘Bondogges’ or ‘Bolddogges.’

Bulldogs have extremely short nasal cavities, and lose their breath very easily. Therefore, it’s very dangerous for them to get winded. Never overexert Fido! (This probably won’t be hard, as most Bulldogs are couch potatoes.)

As with other brachys, Fido will need a harness, rather than a leash. Ask your vet for more information.

Bulldogs don’t do well in the heat. That’s not usually too much of a problem here in Ontario. However, when it does get hot, you’ll need to keep Fido in air-conditioned rooms. You can also offer him a kiddie pool to splash in. Swimming, however, is off the menu. These guys quickly get exhausted in deep water, which can be dangerous.

Fido will need regular brushing. However, he will only need occasional baths. You will have to keep your dog’s eyes and ears clean, however. You’ll also need to clean his face, as those adorable wrinkles can trap dirt and oil.

Bulldogs do have some common health issues. They are prone to hip dysplasia, so you should not encourage Fido to jump or stand. They also sometimes get painful toe cysts. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Bulldogs have shorter lifespans than many other breeds. Fido may become a senior as early as age six. Savor your time with your furry best buddy!
