Homemade Gifts for Kitties

December 1, 2017

Are you finished with your holiday preparations? Cooking, shopping, and decorating are definitely keeping a lot of people busy at this time of year. Don’t forget to get something for your kitty! You don’t have to break the bank getting gifts for your feline buddy, however. Actually, there are quite a few things you can make for Fluffy! Here, a Thorold, ON vet lists some DIY holiday gifts for cats.

Beds

There are lots of great ways you can make DIY cat beds for Fluffy. One option is to upcycle a hard shell suitcase or hatbox. Another cute idea is to take an old end table with doors, and remove the doors. Use paint or varnish to dress it up a bit, and then add some comfy pillows or blankets. You can also just put some soft bedding in a wicker basket.

Cat Tower

A new cat tower will definitely get Fluffy’s motor going! You can use an old stepladder, metal storage shelf, or bookcase. Add some smooth planks to widen out the steps, and then wrap it in carpet or sisal rope.

Box Castle

As you may have noticed, cats have a strange but adorable fascination with boxes. Make your furry buddy her own box castle. This is a great project for kids!

Cat Grass Mat

Plant dirt and cat grass seeds in a shallow tote or an old, clean litterbox. It will grow into a living carpet for your feline pal to nap on. This one is bound to put that smug, happy expression on Fluffy’s furry face!

Window Seat

Birdwatching is one of kitties’ favorite activities. Make your furball a comfy window seat, where she can sit and watch local wildlife. Just add a plank to your windowsill to widen it out. To make it even more comfy, use Velcro to attach a pet bed.

Toys

Toys make great stocking stuffers for kitties! One easy way to make your pet a cat toy is to stuff a baby sock with dried catnip. Or, cut two pieces of material into identical shapes. Sew them together, leaving just enough of a hole to stuff catnip in. Add the catnip, and then close it up and give it to your furry buddy. Instant purr!
