4 Helpful Dog Tricks to Teach Fido

June 15, 2017

Does your dog know how to Beg, Sing, or Roll Over ? Classic doggy tricks like these will never stop being adorable! However, Fido can also learn some tricks that are not just cute, but helpful. Read on as a Thorold, ON vet lists some useful doggy tricks.

Lights On/Off

This one can come in very handy! Of course, this will in part depend on the size of your dog. While you may not have much luck trying to teach a Chihuahua to flip a wall switch, this is a great option for medium or large pooches. (Note: don’t try to teach Fido to turn on lamps or use switches that are attached to cords: this can be very dangerous!) One way to teach your canine buddy this trick is to start by holding a treat just above the switch. When your dog goes for the treat, say ‘Lights’ and give him his snack. You can find other methods, and step-by-step breakdowns, online.

Object Fetch

You can teach your canine companion to bring you your slippers, or get your keys. Fido can also learn to fetch the remote control, or get you a cold drink from the fridge! (Note: your furry buddy will need to know the Fetch command first. It will also help if he knows certain objects by name.)

Bathtub!

Baths are definitely not one of Fido’s favorite things. Many of our canine patients run for cover at the mere mention of the dreaded B-word. However, if you teach your pup that he will get a yummy snack if he jumps into the tub, you may find your four-legged friend becoming much more enthusiastic about his grooming sessions.

Gimme Paw

Do you have a hard time getting your dog to hold still for his peticures? Consider showing Fido to give you his paw. If your furry pal begins to associate Gimme Paw with tasty treats, you may find him becoming much more willing to get his nails done!

Tips

While all of these tricks can be very helpful, it’s more important to make sure that your canine pal knows—and obeys—basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down . Fido should have these important commands mastered before learning any cute tricks.
