Finding the Right Spot for Your Birdcage

May 1, 2016

Have you recently adopted a bird? Good for you! Our colorful winged buddies are quite adorable, and make charming pets. Polly will spend a lot of time in her cage, so you’ll want to be sure it is comfortable for her. Choosing the right cage is of course crucial, but it’s also very important to pick the right place for it. The old real estate adage of Location , Location , Location applies to our feathered friends too! In this article, a local Niagara Falls, ON vet discusses finding the ideal spot for your birdcage.

Fumes

Birds have extremely sensitive lungs, and can get very sick from breathing fumes that are harmless to us. Don’t put your little buddy too close to the kitchen, or near a workshop or studio. You also want to avoid putting Polly in a spot where she would be exposed to aerosols, cigarette smoke, or perfume.

Noise Levels

Loud noises can make our feathered friends very uneasy. Polly won’t be comfortable too close to a TV or stereo, or near your teenage son’s drum kit.

Company

Birds are very sociable, and can get depressed if they are left alone too much. Don’t put Polly in a back bedroom by herself: your adorable pet will get sad and lonely if she’s too isolated. Your bird will be happiest in a place where she can see and hear you, but isn’t in the center of things. A living room or family room would be an excellent choice.

Security

Our feathered friends are quite small and vulnerable. In the wild, birds must always be on the lookout for potential predators. Polly will feel safer if she isn’t exposed on all sides. A corner spot is ideal.

Light/Heat

Don’t put your birdcage in direct sunlight. You also want to avoid putting your winged pal in a drafty area, or too close to an air conditioner, fan, or heating duct.

Helping Polly Feel Comfortable

Put some pet-safe plants near Polly’s cage. Since birds are surrounded by vegetation in the wild, this will make your bird’s cage seem more like her natural environment, and will help your colorful friend feel at home.
