8 Reasons to Adopt a Guinea Pig

Did you know that March is Adopt A Rescued Guinea Pig Month? These cute little furballs, which are also known as cavies, are really very charming, and make adorable pets. Here, a Thorold, ON vet lists some great reasons to consider adopting one.

    They Don’t Need Much Room

One cavy can live comfortably in a cage that is about 7.5 square feet. If you get more than one, you’ll need a bigger cage. However, you can increase your pet’s floor space by adding a second level. Ask your vet for recommendations on setup, substrate, and accessories.

    They’re Gentle

Guinea pigs are often chosen as kids’ pets, and with good reason. They’re very gentle and friendly. Some of them even like to cuddle with their humans!

    They’re Easy Keepers

Like any animal, cavies need good food, a clean habitat, entertainment, and proper veterinary care. However, on a daily basis, you’ll just need to feed your furry pal, give him fresh water, remove waste and uneaten food from his cage, and play with him a bit. You’ll need to clean the cage thoroughly every week.

    They Aren’t Very Loud

Guinea pigs aren’t entirely quiet: they communicate with adorable squeaks and chirps. However, you won’t have to worry about your neighbors complaining that your pet is keeping them awake at night!

    They’re Super Cute

Cavies are absolutely adorable, and lots of fun to watch. You may even be able to show your furry little friend some cute tricks!

    They Can Be Litter Trained

Did you know that Guinea pigs can be litterbox trained? Training will take time and effort, but it will be well worth it in the end.

    They Don’t Need Expensive Toys

Your pint-sized pal will need lots of playthings, including plenty of chewable ones. However, this won’t necessarily cost you very much. You can make some great cavy toys out of cardboard, wood, wicker, or even plain paper. Just choose items without sharp edges, small parts, or decorative coatings.

    They Need Love, Too

We believe that every animal—no matter how big or small—deserves to be treated with kindness and compassion. Smaller pets often get overlooked when it comes to animal charities, but these little guys need loving homes, too!
