    Hug Your Cat Day

Did you know that there is a day specifically devoted to hugging cats? June 4th is officially Hug Your Cat Day! Of course, for some of us, every day is Hug Your Cat Day. However, this is a purrfect chance to show your kitty some extra TLC. Here, a Thorold, ON vet discusses hugging cats.

    The Rules of Hugging Cats

There are some very specific do’s and don’ts to hugging kitties. First of all, you can only hug a cat that wants to be hugged. If your feline friend doesn’t want to snuggle, she’ll probably jump out of your arms. (Fluffy may change her mind and start begging for attention a minute later, but that’s beside the point.) That said, cats can be quite the little lovebugs. Many cats absolutely love being petted, and want to be cuddled 24/7. Indulge your affectionate pet’s requests for attention. Kitty snuggles are one of the best things about having a cat!

    Proper Hugging Techniques

When hugging your cat, use one hand to hold by her bottom or back legs, so that her weight is properly supported. When kitty-hugging time is over, put Fluffy down gently. Never drop your feline pal.

    The Magic of Cat Hugs

Cats have many wonderful qualities, but one of the most charming things about these adorable furballs is the fact that they actually vibrate when they are happy. Many kitties start purring as soon as their owners pet them or pick them up! Hugging cats, as it turns out, is actually very good for us. Fluffy’s soothing snuggles and purrs help calm us, and can be a wonderful source of comfort on bad days. Kitty purrs have also been shown to promote healing, and help people overcome stress, anxiety, and depression. Of course, purring cats also make wonderful sleep aids!

    Cats That Don’t Like Hugs

Some of our feline buddies are rather aloof, and don’t really like being hugged. Never force attention on a cat that doesn’t want hugs. If your furball prefers ear scritches, or even just conversation, abide by her wishes. Fluffy may be purrfectly content just sitting next to you or watching you from across the room. You can also pamper your cat by giving her toys, treats, or kitty furniture.
