    Adopt a Dog Month

October is officially Adopt A Dog Month! While there are sweet and lovable dogs in need of homes all year long, this is a great time to talk about adopting one of our canine friends. A Niagara Falls, ON vet discusses doggy adoption below.

    Choosing Your Pet

While sometimes a furry face immediately melts your heart, at other times, choosing a pet can be very hard! Do some research into various breeds. Some of the things you’ll want to consider are Fido’s activity and grooming needs, size, average intelligence, and temperament. Adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment, so take your time and make sure you’re picking the right pooch.

    Adopting From A Shelter

Adopting from a shelter is not only a great way to find your new pet, it also helps many other animals. You’ll be able to spend some time with Fido before making a final decision. Plus, you may save money on veterinary care, as most shelter pets are already spayed or neutered, and current on vaccines. You’ll also help other needy pets: the space your new pooch vacates will soon be filled by another homeless pup, and the money you spend on adoption fees will help the shelter care for their furry charges.

    Helping Your Pet Settle In

Before bringing your new canine pal home, you’ll need to pick up some supplies. Fido will need bedding, toys, food, dishes, treats, and a leash and collar. We also recommend getting a crate. Put these things in a quiet back room at first, so your pup has a safe spot to relax and settle into his new home.

    Safety

Check your fencing, to make sure it’s secure. Some puppyproofing is also in order. Remove or secure toxic plants; medicine; chemicals; wires and cords; and anything small or sharp.

    Diet

If you know what Fido has been eating, get that same brand for now. Consult your vet before making any changes.

    Veterinary Care

Fido’s exact veterinary care needs will depend on his age, health, and history. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

    The Big Day

Before bringing Fido inside, take him for a walk to burn off his excess energy. If you have other pets or children, ask your vet for advice on making introductions.
