    Household Hazards for Pocket Pets

Do you have a tiny furball for a pet? Hamsters, gerbils, Guinea pigs, and rabbits can all make wonderful pets. One thing you’ll need to be aware of as a pocket pet parent is the fact that many common household items are not safe for these little ones. In this article, a local Niagara Falls, ON, vet discusses household hazards for pocket pets.

    Open Windows

Pocket pets are good at squeezing into tight spaces. If you’re letting your little one out for some recess time, make sure all of your windows are securely closed and latched.

    Stairs

Does your tiny furball have an exercise ball? It can be very cute to watch the little one rolling about, but make sure he can’t accidentally roll himself down some stairs!

    Plants

Many plants are toxic to our furry little friends. Azaleas, cactus plants, and buttercups are just a few of the plants that can be dangerous to your little furball. Make sure to keep any plants that might be dangerous for your little one away from the reach of tiny paws, or better yet, buy only pet-safe plants.

    Chemicals

Household chemicals can be very dangerous for our little buddies. Make sure to keep any cleaning agents, automotive products, paints, and other chemicals securely locked up.

    Pesticides

Pesticides can make your little friend very, very sick! Make sure to use non-toxic pest control methods.

    Wires

Little furballs love to chew! Secure any loose or hanging wires so your little friend can’t nibble on them.

    Holes

Are there spaces behind your cabinets? Is there a loose grate on your floor? These things can be quite hazardous to tiny pocket pets. Make sure to seal up any holes.

    Small Items

Sewing kits, craft kits, toys, and other small items can present choking hazards to your little friend. Be sure to keep anything that has small pieces secured in a place your tiny furball can’t reach.

    Food

Many foods you may enjoy are dangerous for your little pal. Chocolate, coffee, alcohol, and avocados are just a few of the things that could make your little friend sick.

    Tobacco

Tobacco is very dangerous for pocket pets. Even cigarette butts can make your little one ill!
